After reading a lot of posts here which have been so helpful, I decided to file for bankruptcy last October. I was placed into a 100% Chapter 13 plan with about $108,000 in unsecured debt across credit cards and personal loans. I made a lot of financial mistakes, and I also made the mistake of going through a debt settlement company, which only made things worse. My balances increased a lot, nothing was settled, and Chase ended up suing me on both of my credit cards, which were my largest balances.
After all of that, I finally decided to file.
I received some good news last week. My attorney confirmed that my 100% plan was approved. Ironically, Chase only submitted a claim for one of the two cards, and not the one with the higher balance. Amex and Citibank also did not submit claims. Because of that, my total unsecured debt in the plan dropped to around $65,000.
I know I still have a long road ahead, but I honestly feel like I can breathe again. This process has been humbling, but also eye opening. I’ve learned a lot about myself, my habits, and what I need to change going forward.
I’m not proud of the mistakes I made, but I am looking forward to rebuilding, staying disciplined, and doing better moving forward. Just wanted to share my experience so far. Thank you for reading!
