So my husband and I were literally about to file chapter 13 when a friend told me about non profit debt relief organizations that exist to help people in credit card debt. We were so close to filing and had already accepted bankruptcy as our fate that I almost didn’t even look into it, but something told me to just give them a call. I did, and the guy we talked to was very helpful and not pressuring at all. He did a simple credit check to see what debt we had, made sure he wasn’t missing anything, then ran the numbers to tell us how much lower we could get all the interest rates for our various cards, and what monthly payment we’d be looking at. When I tell you my jaw DROPPED when he told us our monthly payment. It’s literally half what our ch 13 payment would have been. It’s for 5 years and we are allowed to make larger payments to complete it sooner which we plan to do. But the relief I feel knowing I can actually afford to survive and also pay off my debt is crazy. With the chapter 13 we wouldn’t have a penny left to our name. No savings, no emergency funds, living paycheck to paycheck for 5 years. Now, we are actually going to be able to start saving money, maybe even afford a vacation once a year.

I know everyone’s situation is different and this route isn’t right for everyone. And if we had qualified for ch 7 or even non 100% ch 13, we would have gone the bankruptcy route. But now that I know there are other options, I just wish I’d known sooner, and I’m hoping this might help someone else out who’s in a similar situation, and encourage them to do some more research before accepting bankruptcy as their only hope.

I’m not going to include the name of the organization here because I don’t want people to think I’m an employee or have some ulterior motive for recommending a company. But if you google debt relief organizations, you should find it!
