We ran into some snags but our attorneys were great about getting issues addressed. After seeing our trustee rip several people a new ass, she was actually nice to us. Here are some tips I have for the process and the meeting:

– Get your courses done early. Ours ended up taking about two hours. We traded two hours for about $120k worth of debt so it was well worth it. Don’t put it off and give the courts a reason to dismiss your case

– Don’t file without an attorney. It will cost you a little money but they specialize in this and can prepare for any anticipated outcome. They can also help when unexpected things happen. Unless you’re versed in bankruptcy law, I would recommend letting the experts take the wheel. They want to help you

– Get your documents and an understanding of your budget before you meet with an attorney. Our consultation was only about 30 minutes because we came prepared. It’s a time saver and it really helps get things moving

– Mentally prepare to budget. We started early and it’s already made a huge difference. We filed chapter 7 so we don’t necessarily have to spend less or finagle much (without credit cards) but we are choosing to in order to avoid this situation again

– Follow the timelines established by your attorney. They will communicate everything you need. Listen to them. They are there to help you!

– Don’t lie at your 341 meeting. You will be under oath. No, you won’t be able to BS your way out of explaining a large charge

– Lastly, don’t be hard on yourself. It’s an intimidating process but it’s a second chance at financial health. The ruling class has mastered the art of starting over and there is little shame socially for those people. Give yourself the same grace and dignity
