I filed Chapter 7 pro se in California (I can’t afford a lawyer, literally living paycheck to paycheck, and had my 341 meeting yesterday. It didn’t go well.

I genuinely didn’t understand that my nonfiling husband’s bank account, 401(k), and interest in our car could count as community property that needed to be disclosed. We don’t own a home, and our car is titled under my husband and mother-in-law’s names.

Because of my misunderstanding, I initially left out a lot of information about assets and community property. The trustee also questioned whether my debts were primarily business or consumer debts.

He told me to consult an attorney and continued my meeting to November 19.

I’ve since gone through my entire petition again and corrected everything I could, including our financial information, assets, and exemptions. I’ve also gathered evidence showing that most of my debts came from my former business. I’m basically going to mail out the amended petition to my trustee and upload it on the Debtor Drop box.

I’m honestly terrified that my case will be dismissed because I made so many mistakes in the beginning. I wasn’t trying to hide anything. I simply misunderstood the filing requirements.

Has anyone had a rough first 341 meeting, amended most of their petition, and still received a discharge? I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences, especially from anyone who filed pro se in California.
