Has anyone had experience finding an apartment in NY after filing bankruptcy?
I’m likely filing soon and one of my biggest fears is housing afterward. I currently rent in NY and have a stable salary, no evictions, late payments, etc. but I accumulated way too much debt and my credit has obviously taken a hit.
One of the reasons I’m trying to get my finances under control is that ideally, when my current lease is up, I’d actually like to move into a cheaper apartment and lower my monthly expenses. But I’m worried that the bankruptcy/credit score will make it harder to move and I could end up stuck paying more simply because I can’t get approved somewhere else.
For anyone who has gone through this:
How difficult was it to get approved for an apartment after filing?
Did your income/employment help offset the bankruptcy or low credit score?
How long after filing or discharge did you move?
Did you tell landlords about the bankruptcy upfront or only address it if they asked?
I’m already working with a bankruptcy attorney, so I’m not looking for legal advice mostly trying to understand what the rental experience was actually like for people afterward.
Any advice or things you wish you knew before apartment hunting would be appreciated.
