Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else.

I filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and 6 days later Chime closed my checking account. I received a notification that my account was being closed, and that my remaining balance would be mailed to me as a check.

Thankfully, thanks to Reddit users who warned this might happen, I had already started opening another bank account. If I hadn’t, I would have been in a really difficult position because my paycheck was due that week. I ended up switching to SoFi after calling them ahead of time to confirm everything before opening the account.

I’m not saying this will happen to everyone, but if you’re filing Chapter 7 and you bank with Chime, I would strongly recommend opening a backup account before you file or as soon as possible afterward. It could save you a lot of stress if your account is closed unexpectedly.

Has anyone else had Chime close their account after filing bankruptcy? If so, how long after filing did it happen, and which bank did you switch to?
