I am really scared about filing Chapter 7 without an attorney and I would appreciate advice from people who have been through this.
I already completed and submitted my eSR forms and received a confirmation number. After filing, I started reading more about the process and saw many people saying that you should always get an attorney, which made me very nervous. I am now trying to understand whether my situation is something I can realistically handle on my own.
I cannot afford a bankruptcy attorney. I tried looking for free legal assistance and contacted several legal service organizations, but they are not accepting new cases at this time. I also tried Upstart’s bankruptcy service, but they told me I should have an attorney for my situation. I am trying to find help, but I have not been able to find affordable representation.
My situation:
– I am currently unemployed. My minimum wage job ended about 2 weeks ago, and I am actively looking for another job.
– I have no house, no car, and very little money.
– I have a small sole proprietorship where I sell items at markets. It does not make a profit; it mostly covers its expenses.
– I have unsold inventory that I estimate is worth around $3,500–$5,000, and I plan to disclose it.
– My lease ends at the end of the month, and because I cannot afford rent right now, I am considering going abroad to stay with my parents for a while.
My parents sometimes help me when I really need it, but it is not regular support. I still pay my own rent, food, and living expenses.
I am trying very hard to complete everything correctly and honestly, but I am worried about making a mistake, especially because I have a small business and inventory.
For people who filed Chapter 7 pro se:
Does my situation sound too complicated to handle without an attorney?
Is the inventory a major concern?
Are there any resources I should try before continuing?
