After seeing several TikTok videos about Chapter 7 bankruptcy, I finally decided to look into it for myself. I had around $50K in debt, mostly credit cards, collections, and unsecured personal loans, and I was just tired.
I filed through Upsolve, which was a huge help because the process was free. I did have to pay the filing fee, but I chose the option to split it into four payments over four months.
Today was my 341 meeting, and honestly… it was SO much less intimidating than I expected.
There were four of us scheduled for the meeting. The first guy went before me and they TORE him up 😂. His meeting lasted about 20 minutes and there were a ton of questions. From what I understood, this was his third time filing, so I’m assuming that had something to do with the additional questioning.
Then it was my turn.
My trustee asked the standard questions:
Did you review your bankruptcy documents?
Did you sign them?
Did anyone help you prepare them?
Do you owe anyone money for child support?
Does anyone owe you money?
Are the documents accurate?
And… that was literally it. My entire meeting took maybe a minute.
I logged off like, “Wait… THAT’S IT?” 😂
Hopefully I’ll receive my discharge within the next couple of months, but even just getting to this point has been an enormous relief. I’ve been accumulating debt since around 2018, and it got to the point where after paying everything, I could still be $800 in the negative. That kind of financial pressure is exhausting. I’m looking forward to finally having my paycheck belong to me again instead of immediately going toward old debt.
I’m 35, live in Texas, and I was honestly worried that filing at this age meant I was somehow “behind” in life. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I’m actually giving myself a chance to reset. Im not married, I don’t have kids, and I still have plenty of time to rebuild. By the time I’m ready to buy a house, get another car, or start a family, I want to be in a completely different financial position. Instead of continuing to send money toward debt that has been hanging over me for years, I can finally start saving and building.
I don’t plan on jumping right back into borrowing money. I may eventually get one credit card for emergencies, incidental expenses, or larger purchases and pay it off responsibly, but for now, I’m perfectly happy keeping my finances as clean and simple as possible.
So shoutout to TikTok for putting all those bankruptcy videos on my For You page 😂 because without them, I probably wouldn’t have seriously considered Chapter 7.
If you’re sitting there thinking, “Am I really about to do this?” — I** **completely understand. I felt the same way.
But today, I walked away from my 341 meeting feeling like I could finally breathe. And honestly? That feeling is worth more to me than anything.
