I filed for Chap. 13 in November. My payments are currently $1,116 per month.

Before getting laid off, my salary was $87,000 and my husband’s was around $85,000. Obviously, our combined incomes were way above the means test ($82,000).

Now, he’s only getting unemployment ($2000 / month) and I’m getting $3600/mo from a freelance project. (I need to save 30% of that income for when I file my 2026 taxes.) So, our new monthly income is $4400 a month.

Obviously, I cannot afford to pay $1,116… I spoke with my lawyer and explained the situation, and he said he’d get back to me later this week. But I am trying to plan as far ahead as I can, so I’m wondering if anyone has been in this situation.

I’m assuming I won’t be able to convert to Chap. 7, but hoping I can pause/reduce payments until we get new jos. I don’t think we will get jobs that pay as much as our previous jobs, so I’m also wondering if I can lower my payments if we both get jobs closer to $60k/year.

Thank you!
