Hi. Found a reputable BK firm, had a telephone consultation, felt comfortable with the straight forwardness and the reassurance that my Chapter 7 case would be simple and straightforward. I paid the fees. Firm works in two states.
Gathered and provided all documents timely, answered all questions honestly, remained highly accessible to the paralegal handling my case. Proofed a version of the petition in January.
Then I chased him for updates. I was given breadcrumbs. I was told that we would have a delay while waiting on updated state and federal forms. I provided another month’s worth of income statements. Then another. Then another.
The firm contacted me today to inform me that the paralegal was no longer in their employ and being investigated for embezzlement. They would like to speak next week about restarting my case.
It may be a little too soon to articulately relay my feelings. My gut told me something was off. As I researched updated forms and found out the updates didn’t apply to me, I posed questions. I asked for updates weekly. I know this isn’t an overnight process. I know I’m not the firms only client. And I know the decision to start the process was tolling for me. I debated for over a year. I tried to fix my financial situation on my own. I finally created a T chart, weighed the pros and cons and decided that filing for bankruptcy was the option that made the most sense. All of this sucks.
So, it’s Friday night and all I can do is wait a few days to speak with the lead attorney in the firm, understand what’s happened and understand the plan moving forward.
Anyone out there have any sort of similar experience with a legal professional as described above?
