I’m planning on filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy around February 2027 and I currently have about $60k in debt. I’m unemployed right now. My situation with my cars is a little complicated. I have 3 cars that are between my name and my siblings’ names. Some of them were put under my name mainly to help with insurance, but my siblings are the ones who actually own/use them. I also have another 3 cars that I’m planning to sell to friends. On top of that, I co-signed for my uncle’s house, but I don’t live there and I don’t believe I actually own the house.

I’ve heard that a bankruptcy trustee can look back at things I did before filing and possibly reverse transfers if they think I was trying to hide assets. I don’t want to do anything wrong or hide anything. I just want to make sure my siblings don’t lose their cars or that cars I legitimately sell to friends don’t become a problem.

What would be the safest and proper way to handle this before filing? Should I leave the cars alone and not transfer or sell anything until I speak with a bankruptcy attorney? If I transfer the cars that genuinely belong to my siblings into their names, or sell my cars to friends for a legitimate fair price, could the trustee still try to take them back? Also, could being a co-signer on my uncle’s house cause problems for my bankruptcy?

I’m in Michigan and would really appreciate advice from anyone who has gone through Chapter 7 or dealt with a bankruptcy trustee. I’m planning to be completely honest and disclose everything. I just want to make sure I handle everything correctly before I file.
