Im feeling incredibly blessed! I filed pro se on 2/17/26. I had 3 active lawsuits, a judgement from AMEX, and what felt like an insurmountable amount of debt. I was sick of being scared everyday of a new lawsuit and the numerous calls from debt collectors. So, I decided to file Ch.7. I printed all the paperwork and with the assistance of Google and AI,
I completed the packet. The filing fee was $338 and I applied for an installment plan. I sent the packet certified mail, but it was unfortunately lost in mail system. I ended up driving to the courthouse and left with a case number. It was such a relief to have the stay in place. The next day I received notification that my two credit cards that were current were closed. It was then silence from all collection sources.
My 341 meeting was April 10th. It was very quick. The trustee did note that there was an issue with my exemptions and would follow up. On May 6, I got an email asking if I received my refund to which I responded right away. I didn’t hear anything else; no demand to turn it over and no further follow up.
I decided to make an account on PACER in early June to see what was in my case file. After receiving a letter in the mail with my activation, I was able to pull up my case and saw that there was an order of no distribution filed the same day that the trustee emailed me on 5/6. On 6/19 i checked again and the order for discharge was
Listed. It’s finally done!
I am so fortunate that the process was relatively seamless filing without an attorney and that I was able to keep my tax refund. I promise to myself that I will never put myself in that situation again.
