I wanted to share my experience because I spent so much time searching Reddit for answers about renting after bankruptcy, and a lot of the posts made me nervous about whether I would be able to get approved.

I filed Chapter 7 on 04/28 and my bankruptcy was officially discharged on August 11, 2026.

I was originally planning to wait before applying for an apartment because I was worried that a very recent bankruptcy would automatically get me denied. But I decided to try anyway.

August 11: Chapter 7 discharged
August 13: Applied for an apartment
August 13: Approved for apartment!

The apartment used LeasingDesk for screening, which made me especially nervous because I knew they would be able to see the bankruptcy.

My income was 3x the monthly rent, and I had a 682 credit score.

The screening report showed the bankruptcy as Chapter 7 Discharged . I had no eviction filings or judgments.

I know everyone’s situation and every apartment’s screening criteria are different, so I’m definitely not saying that everyone will have the same result. But I wanted to share this because I kept seeing people wondering how long they needed to wait after a bankruptcy before applying.

If you’re currently going through bankruptcy and worried about finding housing afterward, don’t automatically assume you’re going to be denied. If you meet the property’s income requirements and have a decent rental/credit history, it may be worth applying.

Hopefully this gives someone else a little hope. ❤️
